Welcome to the practice of Drs. Kelly and Mullins. We started as a family ophthalmology practice in Birmingham, AL. Originally founded in 1954, Stephen John Kelly, M.D. began treating patients with cataracts and other conditions of the eye. His son, Dr. Christopher L. Kelly, continued his legacy of excellent eye care until his retirement in 2022. Third generation Ophthalmologist Stephen J. Kelly M.D. and his partner Sara M. Mullins, M.D. continue to provide the same level of care that our patients have come to expect.
Stephen J. Kelly, M.D.
Dr. Stephen J. Kelly is a native of Birmingham, AL and is the latest ophthalmologist in his family. He received his B.S. from Rhodes College and earned his Doctorate of Medicine at UAB. He completed internship at the Baptist Health Systems and ophthalmology residency at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He has been active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology since 2008 and currently serves as the president of the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Kelly is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He enjoys being outdoors and spending time with his wife and two daughters.
Sara M. Mullins, M.D.
Dr. Sara M. Mullins hails from Baton Rouge, LA. She received her undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University where she was Phi Beta Kappa. She then completed her Doctorate of Medicine at LSU Health Science Center in Shreveport and was selected to the prestigious AOA Honor Society. Dr. Mullins attended UAB for her ophthalmology residency where she served as chief resident before joining the faculty full time. In 2018 Drs. Stephen and Christopher Kelly welcomed Dr. Mullins into their practice in Birmingham. She is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Sara Mullins-Shevin lives in the Birmingham area with her husband, Jacob, and their two children, and she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.
Christopher L. Kelly, M.D. (retired)
Following in his father's footsteps, Dr. Christopher L. Kelly received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and completed his Doctorate of Medicine at UAB. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Tulane University. He has been on staff at Callahan Eye Hospital since 1978, serving as the President of Medical Staff in 1991-1993 and Chief of Staff in 2012-2017. He is a Fellow with the AAO and is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. In 1987, he honored his father's memory by establishing the Stephen John Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund for UAB medical students. Dr. Christopher Kelly retired in July 2022.
